Guest Post Started From the Dorm Room Now We Here The following is a guest post by Sam U. 16 When I applied to MIT, I wanted to be the first man on Marsor even one of the nerdy guys in the control room screaming with joy. I had just finished up an internship at a large defense company and was ready to learn anything and everything about aerospace. However, as a bright-eyed freshman in an environment brimming with opportunity, I ended up trying more than just aerospace. From the start, I knew that MIT had a strong culture of computer science’Course 6’. So much so, that about a third of my class ended up graduating with a CS degree. It was hard to go a day at the Institute without discussing something related to software or tech startups. Entrepreneurship permeated the culture. Student collaboration and hard, motivating problems were prevalent, which together cultivated creativity and rapid execution that could be found in almost every corner of the institution. Although I decided to stick with aerospace after testing a range of majors, I found myself taking Course 6 classes like User Interface Design and Intro to Algorithms. Still, I never thought that I would want to do a startup. My path to entrepreneurship resulted from an entirely different set of decisions. I participated in several hackathons at MIT. It really started off as a fun, competitive way to build tools that people would want. From HackMIT to the MIT Bitcoin Competition, the Institute provided many opportunities to get hands on rather than just brainstorm ideas. Fireflies, the result of one of the hackathons, became a long term project that ended up taking up all of my spare time. Even after the hackathon was over, I found myself spending countless hours improving the app and actually running around campus to learn from users. We had created a peer-to-peer delivery service that employed a matching algorithm, but what it actually ended up being was me bringing my friends food on demand. I remember countless nights working on Aero/Astro problem sets in the student center while waiting for the next order of Beantown Taqueria. Though I was making something like $3/hour and my classes were taking up more and more time, I felt incredibly motivated to solve the problems in a smarter way. Seeking advice, we came across the Martin Trust Center for MIT Entrepreneurship. Besides providing a massive amount of mentorship, resources and guidance, they challenged us to really understand the problem that we were solving. We ultimately realized that the hardest part was actually getting people to use our app, no matter how well it was designed. So we decided to build an AI that would simply notify you on Facebook when a friend could do you a favor. This immediately got traction, and shortly after we fully pivoted away from food delivery. Without the support of the MIT community, both from resources and culture, I would not be working on my startup today. Internal Controls XACC 280 Crystal Riley Sanford September 10, 2010 Instructor Glenn Dakin Internal Controls Internal controls are the measures a company takes to do accomplish two primary goals; protect their assets from employee theft, robbery and unauthorized use. Internal controls are also used to increase accuracy of company financial information, reducing the risk of errors (accidental) and irregularities (intentional) (Weygandt, 2009). Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 The Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 (SOX) was put into effect because of the corporate scams that were being committed in that time period. Congress passed the act to force companies to keep closer tabs on their internal controls. Under SOX, companies are required to â€Å"develop sound principles of control over financial reporting† (Weygandt, 2009). According to Wegandt (2009), corporate executives have complained in about the time and expense that is involved in monitoring internal controls, but it has been pro ven that investors are less likely to invest in a company that does not comply with SOX. So SOX has affected internal controls in a positive way because a company is more likely to attract investors on top of that company having more accurate records. Even if it were not for the investors, companies will see less fraud and a higher amount of accuracy in their records by complying with SOX. As part of SOX, companies are also required to report any deficiencies in their internal controls. Because investors are more confident and comfortable with a company that complies with SOX, it is true in turn those investors lose confidence in a company that has deficiencies in its internal control. With this lose in confidence is the risk of a drop in stock prices. Internal controls can only provide a company with a certain amount of assurance that their assets are being protected. For example, in the accounting office at Wal-Mart, the cash is required to be balanced three times a day; bef ore we start work for the day, after the pick-up (counting registers and making the deposit) and before we leave. This is an internal control that helps us locate where an error occurred limits the window of opportunity to steal money. Cameras, of course, are also put in place to review in case an incident arises. Limitations of Internal Controls One example of the limitation of control is the safeguarding of assets such as store merchandise and office supplies. In most if not all company policies, it is stated that if you take something from the supply closet for use other than work, it is considered stealing. However, a majority of employees have the attitude that a pen will not make a difference, or a notebook, or a stapler, but it is still considered stealing, as is taking a $0. 0 candy bar from a register. It is unreasonable to keep tabs on supplies that employees use, especially for businesses that have a lot of office use and a lot of employees. Employees who are caught ca n be dealt with; otherwise it Is left to the integrity of the employees. â€Å"Control is most effective when only one person is responsible for a given task† (Weygandt, 2009). One example of such a control is one person per cash box. If it is not possible, an audit of the drawer should be performed when the next person signs on. Recently the cash office had a register that was short. Upon research, six different people at been on and off that register all day. At that point it is impossible to determine the responsible party. As a result, all employees who operated that register received a write up for the missing money. Why were proper controls not exercised? Because of the human element. In order for proper controls to take place, only one person can use a register at a time or else an audit is required. Only management can perform audits. This can be time consuming and conflicts with the time constraints and the other responsibilities that an employee needs to or fe els they need to complete. Nothing usually happens anyway, right? There are certain areas that internal controls are easier to keep track of and other areas where they are fuzzy. For example, entering data and having limited tasks in an area increase the effectiveness of internal controls. In other areas, such as cash handling combined with customer service and other various tasks, those internal controls may not seem as important concerning the register as it does stock. Comparison of Internal Controls Establishment of responsibility and segregation of duties are similar in that one person is assigned and responsible for a certain asset. In establishing responsibility, it is easy to determine who made a mistake and how it was made because one person was responsible. In segregation of duties, one person is assigned to a certain task alternately. For example, having one person count the cash in the office and having the other key it into the system, to ensure numbers are not being changed to make everything appear balanced. Physical, mechanical and electronic controls are used to safeguard assets and enhance the security of them (Weygandt, 2009). Examples would be keys only assigned to cash office personnel, the code on the vault, time clocks and video surveillance. Independent internal verification is way of double checking the information reported by employees. For example, managers are not directly associated with the accounting office and they check the daily work completed by accounting office employees on a weekly or semi-weekly basis to ensure that all reports and numbers match. Internal controls of every kind are very important in maintaining accurate records and in discouraging unethical behavior performed by those who have been made responsible for certain controls. Introduction Whether you believe in a higher power or not, religion has impacted our lives in some way. Vice versa, people can make an impact on religions and transform them to what we know today. Take for example Martin Luther. He was a man looking to simply reform the Roman Catholic Church and its preaching’s because he disagreed with it. Symbolism,Characterization, and Faith in Young Goodman Brown Faith is believing what you can’t see or touch. Faith is knowing something especially when there is no proof to back it up. â€Å"Young Goodman Brown† is a story about a man who leaves his wife, Faith, home alone for a night while he journeys with the devil down the road of temptation. During the course of his journey, the man sees many people who seem out of place, including his wife. When he returns home to Salem, he is a changed man. I had always experienced the feeling that there was food lodged in my throat each time ate, or would randomly throw up after meals, but it wasn’t until the seventh grade that things got out of control. My parents always told me stories of trading off who held me while I threw up, and who was on â€Å"clean up crew† while I was a young child, they took me to doctor after doctor and the issue was just blamed on food allergies. I can remember waking up in the middle of the night on many occasions with the most excruciating pain of my life. The feeling of multiple sharp pains would shooting down my abdomen, and spiral out into small circles just on the inside corners of my hip bones, theses pains so severe that my lower body felt paralyzed. After an hour or so of the pain I would throw up, and the pain would weaken and eventually fade away. If I didn’t have the pains, I had the feeling that I was constantly choking as I tried to eat, and then eventually throwing up later that day or evening.The problem was that there was no cause, no rhyme or reason, and no cure to the pain. After being sent to multiple specialists, I was finally seen by world renowned Dr. Wood at Johns Hopkins.He suspected a newly discovered disease called Eosinophilic Esophagitis. EoE is a build up of white blood cells called eosinophil cells in the tissues of yo ur esophagus. It causes the esophagus to harden when food tries to pass through, and eventually there will be â€Å"craters† or legions all down the patient’s throat. The first step was an upper endoscopy (scope) to take a biopsy of the cells in my throat, and an acid reflex test (just to rule it out). A person without EOE should have about 10-20 eosinophil cells in their biopsy; in my case the doctors got to 100 and stopped counting. It was made very clear that I had EOE, but because the diagnosis had only been around for about 5 years when I was diagnosed, there was no long-term research or any plans on how to treat it. Dr. Wood wanted me to go on a diet of just formula with the daily nutrition I needed. Thankfully my parents wanted me to be able to go out to eat with my friends, and live a relatively normal life as I enter my teen years. We selected as a family to treat me off my symptoms, and not worry about the possibility of long-term damage since there was no research to go off of. I am the research. We restricted my diet even more and I began taking more medicines, and in six months we would do another scope to see where my cell count wou ld be. My second scope came back with improving results, along with my third, and my fourth. While the cell count was not normal, it was low enough that I had no symptoms; I even began the reintroduction of milk and egg into my diet. Things were under control and life was great! I started to notice towards the end of my junior year of high school I was starting to have trouble swallowing again, and the pain in my abdomen was making appearances every now and then. I thought if I ignored the problem that I would just go away. In this past June during my typical â€Å"check up† appointment my doctor ordered my fifth scope. The results did not come back good. My cell count had shot-gunned back up, due to the reintroduction of foods. I felt so angry when I got the results last month (August) bad news meant more restrictions to my diet. I soon had a change of heart, my very wise mother reminded me of how these trials have built my character, and helped shaped who I am as a person. Without my food allergies, or my EoE my life would be much easier, but it wouldn’t be my life. All the negative energy I have gets turned into a positive thing when I mentor other young teens going through what I did, through the Food Allergy and Anaphylactic Connection Team’s teen advisory council. I have gotten to travel to different parts of the country and speak at national conferences to speak about my life and how I deal with the battles I face everyday. Thanks to my medical conditions I get amazing opportunities to help others, and meet other people just like me, all things that would not come to be without my allergies. EoE taught me that there is always light in even the darkest the of corners. I have chosen to fight this disease not only for myself, but the future teens who have to battle this disease in the years to come. The trials I have lived through with my food allergies and EOE have made me a more responsible and caring teen.
